If you were going to tackle America’s current challenges, what kind of strategy would you use? That’s the provocative question Robbie Bach, former chief Xbox officer at Microsoft, asked himself one day. His answer led to a new book, Xbox Revisted: A Game Plan for Corporate and Civic Renewal, and a new professional title: “civic engineer.” BPC hosted Bach to discuss his new book and his new mission to improve the world.

Using the “3P Framework”—Purpose, Principles, and Priorities—developed by the Xbox team, Bach takes businesses, government, nonprofits, and readers on the Xbox journey, from garage-shop beginnings to triumphant success. By going back to square one of the Microsoft strategy process, Bach realized something: he already had a template for the kind of leadership and community engagement that can ignite meaningful change.

At BPC, Bach then described how government and nonprofit organizations could be more effective—by outlining a clear strategy with simple, upfront objectives. Xbox Revisited is a wake-up call that asks every business, nonprofit, government agency, and citizen to focus on activities that can positively affect what is happening in our communities, government, and country. In other words, it’s a challenge to begin thinking like a civic engineer.
